Why We Skip the Buzzwords

The meat aisle and social media are flooded with trendy labels: “hormone-free,” “antibiotic-free,” “grass-fed,” and more. These claims sound reassuring but often mislead or add little real value. At Glengarry Traditions, we cut through the noise. We focus on verifiable quality, full traceability, and protein that actually performs for active lifestyles in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec — not marketing hype.

Here are the straight facts on the two topics that generate the most confusion:

Hormones All meat contains natural hormones — it is biologically impossible for any meat to be completely “hormone-free.”

  • In Canadian poultry and game birds, added hormonal growth promotants have been illegal for decades (since the 1960s). No exceptions.
  • In pork, added hormones are also not used.
  • In beef, Health Canada approves six specific hormonal growth promotants under strict regulation and monitoring. They help produce leaner meat efficiently, and residues are tightly controlled by the CFIA.

The CFIA does not allow “hormone-free” claims on any meat because they are inaccurate. You may see “raised without added hormones” on some beef — that is a legitimate distinction if verified. We do not play word games. You get federally inspected Canadian meat with clear traceability, whether or not added growth promotants were used in beef production.

Antibiotics Antibiotics are powerful tools reserved for treating sick animals under veterinary prescription. Preventative or growth-promotion use of medically important antibiotics has been heavily restricted or eliminated across Canadian livestock:

  • Poultry (including game birds) phased out Category I and II antibiotics for prevention years ago.
  • Similar responsible-use rules apply to beef and pork, with strict withdrawal periods and CFIA residue testing ensuring no unsafe levels reach your plate.

Canadian meat consistently ranks among the safest globally thanks to these regulations. We support producers who achieve “raised without antibiotics” through superior management and offer those options when available. Sick animals receive proper care — animal welfare is non-negotiable.

Why this matters for you in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec

We source locally first for shorter supply chains, fresher product, and direct support of regional farmers who meet or exceed national standards. No vague imports or loosely labelled alternatives.

Fitness and performance demand clean, reliable protein. Buzzwords distract from what actually counts: consistent quality, bold flavour where it belongs, lean texture where it matters, and full confidence in every cut. While some guidelines suggest moderating red meat, premium poultry, lean game birds, and well-chosen beef remain smart choices for muscle repair, satiety, and results when sourced with integrity.

We skip the hype so you don’t have to. Real transparency means facts over slogans, regional strength over national averages, and protein you can trust for your goals — not just your plate.
